Het is april 1945 en de inwoners van het mijnwerkersstadje Penzberg horen op de radio dat de oorlog voorbij is. De Amerikaanse troepen kunnen elk moment de stad in Zuid-Duitsland bereiken. De naziburgemeester wordt afgezet door de oude burgemeester en een aantal andere mannen, onder wie de vader van Marie. Schorsch is 15 en zit bij de Hitlerjugend. Hij is verliefd op Marie. Als een fanatieke afsplitsing van de Wehrmacht, die niet van overgeven wil weten, de oude burgemeester met zijn aanhangers oppakt, zijn Marie en Schorsch buiten het stadje getuigen van een vreselijke gebeurtenis. De vader van Marie moet onderduiken en Schorsch ziet met eigen ogen wat de Wehrmacht met alle zogenaamde landverraders doet. Als zoon van een nazi staat hij voor een moeilijke keuze.
