Toch zijn er voldoende zuurstofproducerende planten nodig. De beluchtingspompen kunnen ook helpen om een opening in het ijs te houden in de winter. Voor dit doel kan de luchtstroomsteen onder een Ubbink apparaat worden geplaatst om het water ijsvrij te houden.
