Zij kunnen de afstand tot enkele kilometers, zelfs tientallen kilometers uitbreiden, ze voldoen in de regel aan de afstandsvereisten van LAN. De gebruiker kan kiezen of en welke fiber modules hij wil gebruiken, al naargelang de vraag, om de kosten te drukken.
