Schapen worden al eeuwenlang als vee gehouden en leveren vlees, huiden en wol. Als planteneters en herkauwers wisselen schapen het grazen af met het herkauwen. Er bestaan honderden rassen, waardoor deze zoogdieren sterk kunnen verschillen qua vacht en grootte. Schapen wegen tussen de 45 en 180 kilogram en kunnen tien tot twintig jaar oud worden. Hun beperkte dieptezicht compenseren ze met een uitstekend gehoor en een zeer gevoelige reukzin. Hoewel schapen in een kudde doorgaans de aanwijzingen van een herder opvolgen, handhaven ze ook hun eigen sociale hiërarchie.
