. Bij hun geboorte krijgen de Haflinger veulentjes een naam die begint met de eerste letter van de naam van de vader of de moeder. Hun vacht is steeds roodbruin, de manen en de staart zijn lichter van kleur. Soms hebben ze wolkjes of blessen als tekening op hun kop, maar verder hebben ze steeds één kleur. Als ze volwassen zijn, hebben een schofthoogte van 138 tot 155 centimeter. Hoewel de gewenste schofthoogte van een paard minstens 148 centimeter moet zijn, en de Haflingers daardoor eerder bij de pony's horen, zijn ze eigenlijk toch een paardenras.
