Miereneters zijn edentate dieren, wat betekent dat ze geen tanden hebben. Maar hun lange tong is meer dan voldoende om de 35.000 mieren en termieten die ze elke dag in hun geheel doorslikken, op te slokken. Als de grootste van alle vier de mierenetersoorten kan de reuzenmiereneter ruim 2,5 meter lang worden vanaf het puntje van zijn snuit tot het einde van zijn staart. Hij is bedekt met een grijsbruine vacht met witte voorpoten, zwarte strepen die van zijn borst naar zijn rug lopen, en een borstelige staart. Afmetingen: 15 x 3,5 x 4,8 centimeter.
