Deze zeezoogdieren zijn buitengewoon sociaal en gevoelig. Ze gebruiken doorgaans luide brullen en snuiven naar elkaar als vorm van communiceren, maar zijn werkelijk agressief tijdens de paartijd. Met gerimpelde bruine en roze huiden onderscheiden walrussen zich door hun lange witte slagtanden, grizzly snorharen, platte vinnen en blubberige lichamen.
