De gewone dolfijn is een prachtig zeezoogdier dat behoort tot het geslacht Delphinus. Er zijn twee soorten gewone dolfijnen: de gewone dolfijn met korte snavel (Delphinus delphis) en de gewone dolfijn met lange snavel (Delphinus capensis). Hoewel de naam anders doet vermoeden, is de gewone dolfijn niet de dolfijn die je vaak ziet in maritieme parken of in de televisieserie Flipper. Deze eer komt toe aan de tuimelaar. Maar in de kunst en literatuur van het oude Griekenland en Rome was de gewone dolfijn een geliefd onderwerp.
