Hamsters in het wild besteden het grootste deel van hun tijd aan het graven en foerageren naar voedsel. Tegenwoordig worden hamsters vaak als huisdier gehouden, waarbij de gemiddelde huishamster ongeveer 2 of 3 jaar oud wordt.
