Met behulp van een close-up filter kunt u van dichterbij fotograferen dan de minimale afstand waarop uw lens normaal kan fotograferen. U draait de close-up filter voor op uw lens. Er zijn close-up filters met verschillende sterkte, +1, +2, +3 en +4. Hoe dichtbij u kunt verschilt per objectief en de combinatie van de close-up filter.

De formule luidt:
X : ( D * X + 1)
- X is de minimale brandpuntsafstand van uw objectief in meters
- D is het dioptrie getal (sterkte) op de close-up lens
Rekenvoorbeeld:
U heeft een objectief dat kan scherpstellen vanaf 55 centimeter en u gebruikt de close-up filter met een sterkte van +3. In dit geval luidt de rekensom:
0.55 : ( 3 * 0.55 + 1 ) en dit is hetzelfde als
0.55 : ( 1.65 + 1 ) ofwel
0.55 : 2.65 = 0.21 Meter, dus 21 centimeter
