Gebaseerd op eenvoudig en intuïtief handbeheer, plaatst HEAT spelers in de bestuurdersstoel van intense autoraces, jockeyend voor positie om als eerste over de finishlijn te komen, terwijl ze de snelheid van hun auto beheersen als ze niet willen oververhitten. Door de juiste upgrades voor hun auto te selecteren, kunnen ze de bochten omarmen en hun motor koel genoeg houden om topsnelheden te behouden. Uiteindelijk zullen hun rijvaardigheid de sleutel tot de overwinning zijn! Coureurs kunnen deelnemen aan een enkele race of het "Championship-systeem" gebruiken om een heel seizoen in één game-avond te spelen, waarbij ze hun auto voor elke race aanpassen om de eerste plaats op het podium te claimen.
