Iedere speler krijgt een gedekte stapel kaarten. Op elke kaart staat een vrolijke of een verdrietige clown. Om beurten draait iedere speler een kaart om en legt deze op zijn eventueel eerder omgedraaide kaarten. Zo is voor iedere speler altijd maar één kaart zichtbaar. Als van een bepaalde clown precies 2 lachende exemplaren zichtbaar zijn, proberen alle spelers zo snel mogelijk op de bel te drukken. Maar als er een verdrietige clown op tafel ligt, moet je juist niet op de bel drukken! Wie als eerste correct op de bel drukt, krijgt alle open kaarten. Wie geen kaarten meer heeft, is uitgeschakeld. Wie blijft als laatste over?

Halli Galli Junior is een vereenvoudigde variant van het bekende spel met de bel Halli Galli en is daardoor al geschikt voor heel jonge kinderen.
