Roan is een grote, stoere, vriendelijke fries. Hij is volmaakt gelukkig op zijn stal in Friesland, met zijn baasje Dieuwertje. Samen maken ze heerlijke buitenritten en ze zijn redelijk succesvol bij dressuurwedstrijden. Maar als Dieuwertje op een dag huilend op stal komt, stort Roans wereld in. Dieuwertjes moeder is haar baan kwijt en ze kunnen Roan niet langer betalen. Tot zijn grote verdriet moet hij verkocht worden. Zijn nieuwe baas is heel anders dan Dieuwertje. Roan moet keihard werken in een tweespan, samen met Tjeerd. De twee paarden worden dikke vrienden, maar hebben het ook zwaar en krijgen weinig voer. Bovendien is Tjeerd doodsbang voor water. Roan doet wat hij kan om zijn nieuwe vriend over zijn angst heen te helpen. Het lijkt te lukken, tot ze aan een grote wedstrijd meedoen. Daar gebeurt iets wat Roans wereld nogmaals helemaal op z'n kop zal zetten...
