Rafal is een konik en hij leeft met zijn kudde in een natuurgebied midden in Nederland. Het is een zwaar bestaan voor de paarden nu het winter is. Er ligt een dikke laag sneeuw en de dieren kunnen bijna geen voedsel vinden. In het reservaat worden de koniks niet bijgevoerd en de kudde kan het gebied niet uit om eten te zoeken. Op een dag zien de paarden geen andere uitweg: ze moeten het meer dat de grens van het reservaat vormt oversteken, in de hoop dat aan de andere kant nog wel iets eetbaars te vinden is. Alleen moeten ze daarvoor wel een met sneeuw bedekte ijsvlakte oversteken. Rafal is bang voor het ijs, maar hij beseft dat hij geen andere keuze heeft. Zal hij de overkant halen?
