Joel McCrea speelt de plaatselijke boerenknecht die op het punt staat z'n beste vriend en de vrouw die hij lief heeft, te verliezen in een confrontatie met een meedogenloze bende veedieven. Als Molly Wood (Barbara Britton), een goed opgeleide dame uit het oosten, in een plaatsje in Wyoming aankomt om de schooljuf te vervangen, voelen de Virginian (McCrea) en zijn beste vriend Steve (Sonny Tufts) zich onmiddellijk tot haar aangetrokken. Beiden doen hun best haar voor zich te winnen. In de hoop op een snelle manier geld te verdienen slaat Steve de waarschuwingen van zijn vriend in de wind en sluit zich aan bij de corrupte bende van Trampas (Brian Donlevy). Hij wordt betrapt bij het stelen van vee. De Virginian moet kiezen tussen zijn vriend en de naleving van de strenge wetten van het Westen. Als hij tijdens een achtervolging op de wrede bendeleider wordt neergeschoten, is de kans groot dat hij Molly verliest. Zij wordt heen en weer geslingerd tussen haar neiging om het bandeloze Westen te ontvluchten en de liefde voor haar cowboy.
