De telefoon splitter is een eenvoudig voorwerp waarmee een RJ11 aansluiting kan worden verdeeld in twee aansluitingen. Hiervoor heeft de splitter een RJ11 female (6p4c) aansluiting aan de ene kant, waarop de kabel voor het afgeven van het signaal wordt aangesloten. De andere kant van de telefoon splitter is voorzien van 2 female RJ11 (6p4c) connectoren. De aansluitingen zijn bedoeld voor de koppeling met telefoonkabels die voorzien zijn van een RJ11 stekker met 4 contactpunten. Daarvoor hebben de aansluitingen ook 4 contactpunten die verguld zijn voor een goede connectie. Stekkers die aangesloten worden, klikken vast met een trekontlasting. Het lipje op de RJ11 stekker dient hiervoor en dit kan worden ingedrukt om de kabel te ontkoppelen.
