Het voeden van het kalf in de eerste levensdagen of zelfs direct na de geboorte is cruciaal voor de verdere ontwikkeling. Biestmelk, ook wel colostrum genoemd, heeft een hoger aandeel immunoglobulinen en voedingsstoffen in vergelijking met normale koemelk. Daarom moet het pasgeboren kalf onmiddellijk een grote hoeveelheid biest van hoge kwaliteit krijgen. Het is raadzaam om een voorraad op te zetten met ingevroren biest. Hierdoor is er altijd een voorraad biest van hoge kwaliteit beschikbaar. Als de kwaliteit van de biest na de geboorte slecht is (bijvoorbeeld bij vaarzen) of als de hoeveelheid biest te laag is, kan de ingevroren biest worden gebruikt. De aluminium zakken (4 l) zijn eenvoudig te vullen en kunnen gemakkelijk gepasteuriseerd (optioneel), ingevroren en opgewarmd worden.
