Met de havenmeester worden spelers beloond met punten voor nederzettingen op havenlocaties. De vriendelijke struikrover berooft alleen de rijken, zoals Robin Hood. Voor degenen die minder geluk willen hebben, is er de variant 'Gebeurtenissen op Catan', waarbij kaarten de dobbelstenen vervangen. Daarnaast is er een variant voor het spelen van het basisspel met twee spelers.
