Het zilvergrijze lichaam van de schaduwvaraan ziet er indrukwekkend uit. Paars gekleurde accenten knipperen hier en daar op zijn geschubde hagedissenhuid. Hij heeft een glinsterende paarse, transparante kuif op zijn rug die eruitziet als een vlam. Hij richt zijn gemene rode ogen strak op zijn tegenstanders. Als iemand te dichtbij komt, laat hij dreigend zijn krachtige tanden en vuurrode tong zien. De schaduwvaraan is een schepsel van de duisternis. Hij verdedigt moedig zijn rijk in de schaduwwereld. Hoorde hij daar iets? Hij lijkt razendsnel in de nacht te verdwijnen tot hij nauwelijks zichtbaar is. Hij ligt beschut op de loer. Alleen de paarse kuif op zijn rug is te zien in de duisternis. Soms glinstert er een paarskleurige schub als er bleek licht op valt. Voor de rest is de schaduwvaraan onzichtbaar. Hier wacht hij geduldig op de indringer, klaar om te bijten met zijn scherpe bek.
