In 1865 is de duimstok door Anton Ullrich, de oom van de oprichter van Stabila uitgevonden. Naast het oorspronkelijke materiaal hout dat door een bijzondere behandeling op allerlei manieren steeds werd verbeterd kwamen de kuntstof duimstokken. Tegenwoordig is de duimstok door zijn buitengewoon goede lakken, hoogwaardige houtsoorten of glasvezelversterkte kunststoffen een goed meetgereedschap met een zeer hoge gebruikswaarde.
