Een koershoekmeter werkt met een onderverdeling in 360 graden en bestaat uit 2 draaibare schijven. Hiermee kun je de koers bepalen of uitzetten. Leg de koershoekmeter met het midden op je beginpunt, draai de noordpijl (0 graden) naar het noorden en draai de rode lijn naar de plaats waar het punt zich bevindt wat je wilt meten en lees daar de koers af. Je kan er ook hoeken van gebouwen mee meten (een gewone hoek, een stompe hoek, een scherpe hoek of een gestrekte hoek).
