Normandië, 1944. De elfjarige Paul woont in een Frans stadje dat door de nazi's is bezet. Het is een moeilijke tijd voor hem: zijn beste vriend Gérard, die Joods is, is ineens verdwenen, er is nauwelijks te eten en het lijkt wel of niemand nog hoop heeft. Dan vindt Paul op een dag een Amerikaanse parachutist die gewond is geraakt. De soldaat vertelt hem dat de geallieerden een plan hebben om de nazi's te verslaan.
