Flos groeit op bij zijn grootouders vlak bij de Belgische grens waar de Eerste Wereldoorlog in alle hevigheid is losgebarsten. Zijn moeder werkt als actrice in Amsterdam. Flos ziet haar weinig, maar vlak voor Kerstmis komt ze hem onverwacht ophalen. Eenmaal in de stad heeft zijn moeder nauwelijks aandacht voor hem, omdat ze te druk is met repeteren.
Flos zwerft in zijn eentje langs de besneeuwde grachten. Na een ruzie vlucht Flos naar het glazen Paleis waar hij zich verstopt in de verlaten theaterzaal. Uit het niets duikt daar een schim op die sprekend lijkt op het borstbeeld van de overleden eigenaar van het Paleis. Hij nodigt Flos uit om samen met hem naar een voorstelling te kijken. Wanneer het doek opgaat ziet Flos een toneelstuk dat verdacht veel met zijn eigen leven te maken heeft.
Flos en het glazen Paleis is een verhaal in de geest van Charles Dickens dat zich afspeelt in en rond het legendarische Paleis voor Volksvlijt in Amsterdam.
