Deze film van Richard Linklater gaat over twee mannen die elkaar na 10 jaar ontmoeten in een motelkamer in Lansing, Michigan. Vince (Ethan Hawke) en Jon (Sean Robert Leonard) waren elkaars beste vrienden op highschool. Jon is een debuterende regisseur die is uitgenodigd op een Film Festival in zijn geboorteplaats. Vince zit in allerlei duistere drugszaakjes en heeft het niet verder geschopt dan vrijwilliger bij de brandweer. De ontmoeting begint amicaal maar al snel blijkt Vince een dubbele agenda te hebben. Vince wil het graag hebben over hun gezamenlijke highschoolvriendin Amy (Uma Thurman). Hij probeert Jon een bekentenis te ontfutselen die hij stiekem op tape opneemt. Vince wil dat Jon toegeeft dat hij tijdens een uit de hand gelopen feestje Amy heeft verkracht. Om alles nog gecompliceerder te maken, heeft Vince ook Amy uitgenodigd. Vince is uit op een confrontatie, maar het resultaat blijkt ook voor hem een grote verrassing te zijn!
