De Matatabiboom is familie van de Kiwiboom en groeit in Azië, met name in China en Japan. De gedroogde takjes van deze boom hebben een zeer bijzondere uitwerking op katten. Er zit een stof in die katten lekker vinden en laat ontspannen. Katten die van zichzelf ontspannen en relaxt zijn, hebben vaak minder interesse in de stokjes hebben dan katten die onder spanning staan.
