Gebruik de aquarelverf met kwasten met natuurlijke haren, die veel water kunnen opnemen, of gewoon synthetisch haar. Ze worden meestal gebruikt op aquarelpapier dat speciaal voor dit doel is gemaakt, maar zijn ook bruikbaar op andere soorten papier of oppervlakken zoals een aquareldoek, hout, sommige soorten plastic of perkament.. Bij waterverf worden kleurpigmenten in water opgelost en op het aquarelpapier overgebracht.
